I went here for dinner and it was quite lovely! Our waiter was very friendly and bubbly. I tried cold soba noodles with salmon sashimi for the first time. It wasn’t my absolute favorite dish I’ve tried. It’s a lot of the same textures all in one dish—soft cold fish, soft cold noodles, soft cold fish eggs, etc. But wow, it was amazingly fresh tasting. I can tell they use great ingredients! I think it’s totally worth trying—maybe I would like the cold soba noodles with the spicy beef better. We had some salted edamame to start and it was perfect. We also ordered some “sweet” drinks and they were very alcoholic. Our waiter offered us some sprite to mix in free of charge!

My friend and I walked in around 1:45PM on Sunday and there were plenty of seats open as we walked in. The server was really kind and walked us through the specials. I ended up getting the Summer Trio (I believe) since it was limited time. I definitely want to come back for some of their other dishes when the weather is cooler. While the bowls are large, there is a fair amount of food, I wouldn't say you will be overstuffed and would have room for dessert, for sure!

The food was amazing. The portions of upon, cold upon, etc. were large and worth the price. We got one combos that included 4 appetizers, a large bowl, and one of the week's desert special along with 3 other bowls, volcano sushi, and 2 drinks. I highly recommend the cold udon (popular one) and the yuzu sorbet (so good)! The atmosphere was warm and nice and the service was great. It's right next to union square Park so its also really accessible by trains. It was kinda pricy but Tsuru Ton Tan is in Manhattan so prices were average for that location. Did I mention the portions are large?

I've been to Tsurutontan periodically over the past few years and it's a classic option for when I'm in the mood for udon -- I'm always quite pleased with my meals here, and the price point is surprisingly good, especially for living in New York. One of their "things" (maybe a bit gimmicky) is the ridiculously large size of their udon bowls, but to their credit the portion sizes of the udon is quite large, too. I've tried a bunch of their broths -- some favourites include the sukiyaki (esp with wagyu -- deliciously flavourful with the perfect balance of sweet and savoury) and the cold udon (with or without spicy beef -- perfect for a hot day). The sushi is also very yummy here, too -- always fresh and unexpectedly cheap. I love getting the salmon lover set. The rice dishes are a bit lacking, though -- I tried the sukiyaki don recently and it just felt very bland. The sukiyaki flavour didn't really come through in the meat or the sauce, and the beef was pretty dry and oily. I'd probably suggest sticking with the udon or sushi options haha Overall I'm always quite happy (and full!) with my meals here, and everything on the menu is relatively cheap for the quality and portion sizes. I definitely recommend giving this place (or one of their other locations) a try!

5 stars for their service & atmosphere but 3 stars for their udon. Their udon is soggy because they “cooked them in batches for 20 minutes”?! I suppose that udons shouldn’t be cooked over 1 minute if you want them to be chewy. The server was very nice and offered to let me try another batch of noodles. It was even soggy-ier Stay away if you prefer chewy udons :P
